Lanzhou officially responded to the aluminum hazardous waste pollution: the incident did not fall within the Qilian Mountains.
BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) According to the official Weibo of the Propaganda Department of Lanzhou Municipal Committee, the press conference on the investigation and disposal of environmental pollution related issues of Chinalco Lanzhou Branch was held on the morning of December 26. According to the official introduction of Lanzhou, after preliminary investigation and verification, Chinalco Lanzhou Branch is located in Gangzi Village, Ping ‘an Town, Honggu District, Lanzhou City, east of Datong River, and does not belong to Qilian Mountain.
On the morning of 26th, Zuo Long, Vice Mayor of Lanzhou Municipal Government, attended the press conference to report the investigation and disposal of environmental pollution related issues of Chinalco Lanzhou Branch.
According to reports, after preliminary investigation and verification, Chinalco Lanzhou Branch is located in Gangzi Village, Ping ‘an Town, Honggu District, Lanzhou City, east of Datong River, not belonging to Qilian Mountain, and more than 70 kilometers away from Wushaoling, the starting point of Qilian Mountain in Shandong Province.
Shanshengou and Salagou, the dumping sites of electrolytic aluminum overhaul slag of Chinalco Lanzhou Branch, are about 3 kilometers north of Gangzi Village and separated from Gangzi Village by Beijing-Tibet Expressway, National Highway 109 and the factory area of Chinalco Lanzhou Branch.
According to the press conference, from the monitoring data over the years and the recent sampling monitoring of 44 sampling points of soil, gas and water around the enterprise by the joint working group, the monitoring data of soil, gas and water around Chinalco Lanzhou Branch did not exceed the national standard limit.
According to the People’s Daily client report, at present, Lanzhou Environmental Protection Bureau has filed a case against the environmental violations of Chinalco Lanzhou Branch, and imposed a maximum fine of 100,000 yuan on Chinalco Lanzhou Branch and Gansu Xinxin Charging Company, the third party responsible for the disposal of solid waste. Chinalco Group gave 2 warnings within the party, 1 dismissal and 2 administrative warnings to the relevant responsible persons of Lanzhou Branch. Honggu District held accountability for two cadres whose supervision was not in place. After October 9, the Honggu District Government launched a special investigation on the hidden dangers of solid hazardous waste in the whole region. In the follow-up investigation, about 40.75 tons of overhaul slag were sorted and transported, and all of them were put into the enterprise library for temporary storage. When the media reported it again on December 18th, the investigation and rectification work was in progress.
The People’s Daily client reported that at present, the public security department has been involved in the investigation to further find out whether there is any illegal problem. In accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the Gansu Provincial Party Committee and the provincial government and the deployment of the Provincial Environmental Protection Department, Lanzhou launched a special investigation and rectification campaign for hazardous wastes in the city on December 23.
